CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Co-curricular activities at PSG Primary School, Peelamedu are an integral component of a well-rounded and balanced education. Co-curricular activities positively impact other areas of a pupil’s school life. They enhance imagination, productivity, stress relief, team work and social skills. The activities have been carefully chosen to develop logical thinking, creativity, active listening, communication, strategy, leadership, physical stamina, and motor and coordination skills.
Co-curricular activities are conducted thrice in a week. The curriculum has been designed to give each pupil the opportunity to participate in all the co-curricular activities. We ensure that we provide ample encouragement and guidance to our pupils during these activities.
Drawing
Pupils are provided opportunities to participate in drawing and painting competitions. PSG Primary School believes drawing and painting are the most widely used and best instruments of a child’s emotion and views, thus the methods of sketching, still-life, water colour, painting and oil painting are taught. Creativity is encouraged in these activities, so that pupils learn to express themselves through painting.
Science Exhibition
Stds 3,4 & 5 are offered the opportunity to participate in SS Kulam Block level Science Exhibition every year. Pupils exhibit their skills in the science domain fostering the quest for learning. Pupils who are interested in learning and sharing higher scientific knowledge come together and exhibit their ideas.
Literature Club
DEBATES: Today, children are an opinionated lot. We believe in channeling these opinions and helping children express themselves better. Debates are regularly conducted section-wise in Tamil. A topic is chosen and children put forth their opinions, challenging and substantiating their statements.
Elocution
The best way to bring children out of their shell is before their peers. The school holds regular elocution competitions section-wise in Tamil.
Dance
“Dance is a type of art that generally involves movement of the body, often rhythmic and to music.” It is performed in many cultures as a form of emotional expression, social interaction or exercise in a spiritual or performance setting and sometimes used to express ideas or tell a story or to depict devotional stories related to the supreme power.
PSG Primary School conducts Bharatanatyam classes to improve and improvise the dancing skills of the pupils twice a week. Children take keen interest in all activities and participate with great enthusiasm. Every year different programmes are held such as Teachers’ Day, national festivals and many special events where pupils are given opportunities to express their talents and creativity in dance. Annual function is the platform where there is hundred percent participation and every pupil gets a chance to perform and prove his/her worth. All these activities help in building up the confidence level of the pupils and further improving upon their skills.
Karate
Karate is a total learning activity. Karate develops a child’s athletic abilities and self-awareness, and improves the child’s capabilities in self-defence. As we all know, learning and practising karate has become an essential part of today’s life for self-defence, mental development and physical fitness. A pupil who practises karate can improve power of meditation and concentration, and develop a disciplined personality.
Yoga
Yoga is a group of ancient spiritual practices originating in India. Yoga is mostly associated with the practice of asana (postures) of Health Yoga or as a form of exercise. Yoga is widely practised in our school. We empower pupils with yoga-inspired exercises to promote lifetime wellness. We make yoga available to every Std right from I to V so that pupils develop body-mind awareness and the ability to nurture their own well-being.
Library
Our endeavor is to inculcate the habit of reading in the growing children so that they learn to go beyond the curriculum. With 3000 books, it provides a stimulating, user friendly and information rich environment. Its resources also help in integrating it, with our well-equipped laboratories and its activities. It has a vast collection of fiction and non-fiction books. It has a wide variety of books on art and craft, travel, drama, poetry, philosophy, competitions. They are extensive latest titles to suit reference needs. In addition, all the leading journals and newspapers are available to bring them up-to-date with the latest information and trends. A well-planned reading space helps them jot down necessary reference details.
Computer Lab
Computer Lab is equipped with 10 systems with separate monitor, cpu, keyboard and mouse with sufficient space intervals.
A separate staff for the Computer Lab is provided by the Management for the benefit of the students.
Balar Sabai
Class 3, 4 & 5 are given the opportunity to exhibit their skills and knowledge in the areas like general knowledge, songs, dramas, proverbs and riddles monthly once.
Jockying (Radio)
An exciting activity with professional capability to earn a livelihood, Radio Jockeying combines quick thinking, awareness of current trends, public speaking and other skills. Students of Class 5 actively participate in programs across PSG FM, All India Radio and Suryan FM.
Arts & Crafts
Children portray their imagination on paper in form of modern art, figurative drawings and landscapes. The splendour of splashing colours has always been a visual feast to all and our students excel in playing with colours from all the sorts ranging from crayons to oil paints.
Simple but attractive items are prepared by the children up to class 5 which have a magnetic charm. This activity teaches the students ingenious ways of cutting, wrapping, covering, gluing paper, card and fabric to provide a wide range of decorative items.
Field Visit
Field trip to Children traffic park, GD Naidu Museum & Regional Science Research Centre are arranged exclusively for students in Class 5.
Puppet Show
Puppetry has been used traditionally in India as a popular and an inexpensive medium to transmit knowledge about Indian myths and legends.
Puppetry as a teaching-learning experience in the classroom is viewed in terms of the objectives achieved, resources required keeping in mind, time and money constraints.
Importance of Puppetry in the field of education lies in the fact that this medium helps in developing imagination, creativity and observation skills in the children.
Indoor Games
Chess
The game of chess helps young people learn to concentrate, think logically, overcome obstacles, spot patterns and categorize information. It helps with the development of problem-solving skills, planning, patience, focus of thought and self-discipline. Students play the game under the guidance of a teacher.
Carrom
Carrom is a table top based game that is increasing in popularity. The different standards and rules shall be explained by the teacher and implemented by the student.
